I get asked by clients what ‘2 props’ mean when they want to book the Newborn Essence package, which includes the baby in 2 props and images with parents. So I thought I could explain through the session post.

This precious baby boy was 16 days old when I photographed him. He was 2 weeks early so he was still quite tiny. With Newborn Essence, we usually use one basket prop and one fabric prop on a bean bag. The wood box you see below is one prop. With each prop, we create a couple of different looks. We started with the baby wrapped and with a hat. Then we changed the wrap style so can show the baby’s skin more and hands and feet. Then we had the baby completely naked. Then we also do closeups and images from different angles. So with the first setup we end up about 6~8 images.

The second setup is the blue fabric on a bean bag. When we use a basket prop where the baby is lying down on his back, we do side and lying-on-the-tommy poses with the bean bag prop. Often we do one naked pose and cover with a wrap in the same pose. There are various newborn poses done on a bean bag and the two-pose combination varies session to session depending on what pose the baby is comfortable in. With this little one, we did a side post and folding in half pose.

A lot of these poses are done easier and not disturbing the baby in the first week or two when the baby is very flexible and likes to sleep.

Then we do poses with mom, dad,and for the family. With each, we get a couple of different looks as well. If the session goes smooth without feeding, the session is done in 1.5 hours. Often one of two feedings, or/and diaper changes are needed so the session takes more like 2 hours or a bit longer.

Do you like what you see? We get booked a couple of months in advance for newborn sessions so it is the best to book latest a couple of months before your due date.
